National Art Exhibitionの第24回Outstanding Artistに選ばれるなど、多くの受賞歴を持つタイのコンテンポラリーアートシーンにおける重鎮Pradit Tungprasartwongの個展が2019年10月5日より31日までバンコクのリバーシティにある333Galleryにて開催されました。5日に行われたオープニングレセプションと彼のアートワークなどについてご紹介いたします。
アーティスト Pradit Tungprasartwong
Pradit Tungprasartwongはタイを拠点に展覧会を開催し、ナショナルアウォードなどで多くの受賞歴を持つコンテンポラリーアーティストです。仏教における法を意味するダルマ（dharma）によるインスピレーションを反映した彼の作品は、生と死、苦悩や老いなど人が避けて通れない苦しみと欲望について描いています。
病による困難
彼の芸術創造の道のりは決して平坦なものではなく、彼は若くして脳に化学的不均衡が認められ精神機能障害の発作に苦しみました。そして近年には最愛の人物と死別するなど多くのことがのしかかりました。しかし彼の中のアートはまだ感情に反応し続けています。
人生で最も誇りに思うこと
彼は人生について、25年間苦しみと欲望との闘いであり、幸福を思い出せず、苦しみ、病気、死、互いの分離だけを物の山として見ています。しかしラダladhaの言葉である「人生で最も誇りに思うことは優しさを感じることである」と、そして葉を一枚見ただけで涙をこぼす様を弟子が見るように、自分の良い個性を与えることができると考え、彼自身が自らを尊重しています。そして説教を通じてヴィンセント・ヴァン・ゴッホのように自ら命を絶つほどの苦しみと闘う。それが私の人生であると彼は語ります。
オープニングレセプションの様子
2019年10月5日の18時より開催のオープニングレセプションの30分前にはすでに多くのオーディエンスが来場していました。同じくバンコクを拠点としているアーティストたちの顔も見られ、彼の個展の注目度が伺われます。
ゲストアーティストやギャラリー関係者とPradit Tungprasartwongによる挨拶がありました。
展覧室に入ると作家自らによる作品解説が行われ、オーディエンスは興味深く耳を傾けていました。

万人に唯一平等である死
鋭い眼差しのアーティストは、声をかけると非常に包容力のある雰囲気の笑顔で迎えてくれる人物でした。彼の描く絵は老いた者だけでなく若者にも常に傍らにいる死について思い知らされるものであり、作品の中にある骸骨は本来の姿、本質について象徴的に表現されています。絵の中の女性は人生の記憶を思い浮かべながらもその表情は何かしらの不安を抱えているかのようです。
彼の作品を見ているとメメント・モリ（memento mori）という言葉が浮かんできます。
